About SnapSpecies

What is this guide?

SnapSpecies is a quick-reference identification guide designed for volunteers working on the Snapshot Ireland camera trapping project. It covers the mammals and birds most commonly captured by camera traps across Ireland.

Who is it for?

This guide is aimed at volunteers who are classifying camera trap images and need help telling one species from another. Whether you're a seasoned naturalist or completely new to wildlife identification, the structured tips and similar-species comparisons should help you make confident IDs.

How to use the guide

  1. 1

    Browse or search

Go to the Species Guide and use the search bar or filters to find your species.

  2. 2

    Read identification tips

Each species page lists the key features visible in camera trap photos, in order of usefulness.

  3. 3

    Check similar species

If you're unsure, check the "Similar Species" section to see how to tell look-alikes apart.

  4. 4

    Use the badges

Activity pattern (diurnal/nocturnal) can help narrow down species when your photo has a timestamp. Size badges help when you have reference objects in frame.

Camera trap tips

  • Check the timestamp — knowing whether a photo was taken at night or during the day immediately narrows the possibilities.
  • Look at body shape first — overall proportions (stocky vs. slender, long tail vs. short) are more reliable than colour in infrared images.
  • Compare size to surroundings — use nearby vegetation, paths, or known objects to estimate the animal's size.
  • Gait matters — the way an animal moves (waddle, bound, trot, stalk) can be a strong identifier, especially in video clips.
  • When in doubt, mark as unsure — it's better to flag uncertainty than to guess incorrectly.
